Engraved folding map and four folding plates (outlines and military routes and positions hand-colored). (Some pale dampstaining.) Contemporary boards, uncut (rebacked). Provenance : Carl F. Palfrey, Capt. of Engineers, U.S. Army, Oswego, NY (inscription dated 13 October 1886 on front flyleaf), who served in the military department of Arizona and Southern California and in 1889 surveyed for a canal between Lake Ontario and Niagara River; Worcester County Athenaeum (bookplate laid in at end; partially effaced ink stamp on title; embossed duplicate stamp on title). "THIS BOOK HAS GREAT VALUE, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IT CONTAINS MANY DOCUMENTS THAT CANNOT BE FOUND ELSEWHERE WITHOUT GREAT LABOR" (Church) FIRST EDITION, later state of the general map, dated 3 February 1787. Tarleton's is the standard work on the Southern campaigns in the American Revolution. Tarleton was the commander of a Tory cavalry unit, the British Legion, and served in America from May 1776 through the siege of Yorktown. He was renowned for his brutal tactics and hard-riding attacks. The plans illustrate the siege of Charleston, the battles of Camden and Guildford and the siege of Yorktown. The large folding map depicts the marches of Lord Cornwallis in the Carolinas, with Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Counties.
