Es sind kaum vergleichbare Uhren bekannt. Die meisten Taschenuhren, die mit diesem hochwertigen Kaliber ausgestattet wurden, haben schlichte Goldgehäuse. Jean Antoine Lépine wurde am 18. November 1720 in Challex (Frankreich) geboren. Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Uhrmacher ging er 1744 nach Paris und arbeitete in der Werkstatt von André Charles Caron. Um 1750 entwickelte Lépine die Komma-Hemmung. 1756 heiratete er die Tochter von Caron, Madeleine-Françoise Caron, und wurde dessen Teilhaber. 1762 absolvierte er erfolgreich seine Meisterprüfung und wurde 1766 noch unter Louis XV. zum Königlichen Hofuhrmacher ernannt. Diesen Titel behielt er auch unter Ludwig XVI. und unter Napoleon. 1769 zog sich Caron im Alter von 72 Jahren aus der Firma zurück und Lépine übernahm diese vollständig. 1770 erfand Lépine das nach ihm benannte Lépine-Kaliber und revolutionierte das Taschenuhrwerk mit einer bis dahin nie da gewesenen Konstruktion.
