TASMANIA - Henri de Freycinet. Chart entitled 'Carte de la Baie Frederick Hendrick situeé sur la côte Orientale de la terre Van Diemen ? Par le lieutenant de V a u. H r y Freycinet an 10 de l'Ere Francaise /, autograph manuscript on paper (watermark: J.KOOL) by Henri de Freycinet, ink and watercolour, squared in pencil, soundings denoted in pen and track of survey in red ink, 14 x 14 1/8in. (36.8 x 36cm.), Frederick Henry Bay, Tasmania, February 1802. The chart bears the numerous contemporary or near-contemporary pencil annotations indicating coastal features such as rocks, trees, a lake and cliffs. It is annotated in a nineteenth-century hand 'à mettre sur la carte Générale'. It is evident that this detailed charting of Frederick Henry Bay adding more of the adjacent coastline and bay was one of the surveys used by Baudin for his map of the area. (Baudin, Atlas , plate 4, detail.) This chart is annotated on the verso in a nineteenth-century hand 'No 3'. It is in the same hand as Lots 2 and 9.
