TASSIN, Christophe Nicolas (d.1660). Les plans et profils des toutes les principales villes et lieux considerables de France. Paris: Sebastien Cramoisy, 1634-1636. First edition of both parts of the earliest detailed pocket atlas of France. This attractive collection of maps, plans and views of French cities is of particular interest to military historians as it contains many views of fortification systems used at the time. Christophe Tassin was a royal engineer and geographer. Pastoureau, Tassin VII, VIII. Two parts in one volume, oblong quarto (160 x 225mm). Engraved titles, 19 engraved sub-titles, 15 engraved tables, 2 engraved folding maps and 411 engraved maps plans and views, one of which coloured in a contemporary hand (marginal repaired tear just into image of map of Blamont, light marginal finger soiling, some waterstaining to the text leaves and upper outer corner of a few quires, a few spots). Contemporary vellum, wide foliate border stamped in gilt on sides with central gilt lozenge, flat spine lettered and decorated gilt with same design (new endpapers, foot of spine chipped, lightly soiled). Provenance : ‘Le Francois’ (unidentified; contemporary ownership inscription to title) - Michel-Augustin-Thérèse de la Place de Mont Evray (bookplate).
