TASSIN, Nicolas (d. 1660).
Paris: Melchior Tavernier 1634. 2 parts in one volume, oblong 2° (270 by 400 mm). Text in French and Latin. 2 engraved additional titles, folding general chart serving as sheet index and 29 full-page engraved coastal charts (folding chart very slightly torn, occasional very faint dampstaining at margins). Contemporary limp vellum (slight staining). Provenance: Sir Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653-1716), Scottish patriot, and one of Britain's greatest bibliophiles at the time of the Glorious Revolution, whose library was reconstructed by P.J.M. Willems in 2001(ownership signature on title "A Fletcher" and the cost "3 gul: 10 st:" on front free endpaper). One of two editions with different imprints published in the same year; no priory has been established. The 29 maps were intended to assist with coastal defense. Tassin combined material of his own with that of other cartographers. The first part charts the Atlantic coastline from Calais to San Sebastian; the second the Mediterranean coast between the Spanish border and Villefranche. Pastoureau Tassin V Ac; see Nordenskiöld 292 (also 1634); Tooley p. 42 (“Cartes gen. de toutes le costes de France”).
