Title: Ten letters from Edmund Seymour, president of the American Bison Society, to William T. Hornaday, head of the Bronx Zoo Author: Seymour, Edmunc Place: New York Publisher: Date: 1916-1920 Description: Typed letters signed by Edmund Seymour. Seven of the letters are on letterhead of the American Bison Society, of which he was president (Theodore Roosevelt was the Honorary President); Two are on letterhead of The Camp-Fire Club of America. Edmund Seymour writes to W.T. Hornaday about matters concerning protection and preservation of Bison and the big game animals of North America, with insight into some of the personal relationships between conservationists at the time. On Dec. 16, 1919, "Dr. Field seems to think we ought to get ten men who would contribute $25,000 each to buy land outside the Yellowstone Park to cover the elks' feeding ground..." He also offers a defense of remarks by author/naturalist George O. Shields, "you ought to make allowances for the shortcomings of Shields. Probably he never really meant anything by what he said. a great many people get dyspeptic and write things without really meaning them..." On Dec. 20, 1916, he attempts to mediate between Hornaday and Ernest Thompson Seton "I have read over carefully the correspondence between you and Seton which I herewith return... I think you must have been pretty mad when you wrote that letter... it is certainly controversial, and put it to Seton to defend himself... Seton now comes over and offers the palm branch. Now, these nails that you have been driving into each other might just as well be pulled out..." On Nov. 7, 1917, he discusses what to do with the bison being raised and the herds replenish themselves, "the heads should be sent to a certain taxidermist to be mounted and sold at a government fur sale, and the hides should be sent to a tanner to be tanned and sold in the same way..." Lot Amendments Condition: Generally very good condition, some better. Item number: 256473
