TÊTE DE RELIQUAIRE POUR LE BYERI, FANG N'TUMU Gabon Visage humain au grand front bombé, bas de la face dessine un coeur, la coiffe composée d'un diadème et d'un couvre-nuque, sous les arcades sourcilières arquées, les yeux sont en fort relief, le nez court est droit, la bouche fermée faisant la moue se confond dans l'ovale du menton prognathe, au niveau des tempes, sont sculptées les oreilles en demi-lune dédoublées, marquées d'un tragus en demi-cercle et percées d'un orifice pour tenir un ornement, le cou puissant est cylindrique, il se prolongeait autrefois par le piquet de fixation. Une ancienne inscription à la peinture blanche se devine à la base gauche du cou, peut-être une inscription de F. H. Lem. Très belle et ancienne patine d'usage, laquée et croûteuse, suintante par endroit (au-dessus de l'oeil gauche). RELIQUARY HEAD, BYERI, FANG, GABON Magnificent Fang head of prestigious provenance. From the front, the face seems reserved, a feature of Fang sculpture. The cut of the head dress is unusual, prolonging and amplifying the curvature of the domed forehead. Polished on the forehead, the patina is thicker on the head dress where it received the ritual oils and sacrfical offerings; in the cavity between head dress and chignon, traceds of red padoukh pigments can be seen, with which sacrifical objects would have been covered.
