TEXAS]. Viva la Independencia... Chihuahua: Cayetano Ramos, 1841. Broadside (302 x 208 mm). Large crown-in-shield watermark. (A few pale stains.) FIRST EDITION, A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED COPY. This broadside represents the first published account of the capture of the Texan-Santa Fe Expedition by Governor Manuel Armijo of New Mexico. Streeter was aware of only two copies: one at NYPL and his own, now at Yale. The republic of Texas sent out an expedition to strike a new route to Santa Fe and gain some of its trade. As this broadside indicates, Mexico viewed this as an invasion, and all members of the expedition were imprisoned. The broadside concludes with a patriotic call to arms as if to renew war between Mexico and Texas. This broadside also reflects an important period in the statehood of Texas. Though at the time Texas was an independent republic, the Texan-Santa Fe Expedition became the subject of a heated diplomatic controversy between Mexico and the United States. Not in Sabin.
