THACKERAY, WILLIAM MAKEPEACE. The poem begins: "In the pleasant Summer weather, When the sun was low Side by side we walked together Just a year ago...", and ends: "Gone for ever -- sorrow only Future life can know, Since she died and left me lonely -- Just a year ago"; Autograph manuscript notes, n.p., n.d., a small 4to leaf separated at center horizontal fold into 2 oblong 8vo pages, in his upright hand. The first page contains caustic definitions of a Tory and a Whig ("who dare not be a knave nor an honest man but is a sort of whiffling Harlett"). The second page quotes Blackwood's Magazine on John Keats and continues: "Reader if thou art an honest stout country Squire what thinkest thou of the following debauch with Hunt & Hazlitt...", (this is followed by five lines of verse ending "And a moon & friends arm to go home with at night").
