THACKRAH, Charles Turner (1795-1833). The Effects of the Principal Arts, Trades, and Professions, and of Civic States and Habits of Living, on Health and Longevity: with a particular reference to the trades and manufactures of Leeds: and suggestions for the removal of many of the agents which produce disease, and shorten the duration of life . London: Longman & others, 1831. 8 o. Original tan cloth, paper spine label, uncut. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH TREATISE ON OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE. The work is divided into four sections, on workmen, shopkeepers, merchants and master-manufacturers, and professional men. "It attracted attention from both medical men and laymen at the time it appeared, and played an important part in stimulating the factory and health legislation which mitigated some of the worst features of the industrial revolution. The book also includes important information on the harmful effects of child labor" (Garrison-Morton 2123). Norman 2064. -- THACKRAH. Published the same year as the first English edition, the American edition included explanations of the scientific terminology and the French and Latin phrases used in the text. "On the influence of trades, professions and occupations in the United States, in the production of disease - being the prize dissertation for 1837". Extract from: Transactions of the Medical Society of the State of New-York 3 (1836-1837), pp. 91-150 [N.p., n.d.]. 8 o. Modern black buckram. FIRST EDITION, journal issue, of THE FIRST AMERICAN WORK DEVOTED WHOLLY TO OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE. McCready had read Thackrah's works on this subject, and had first-hand experience of such cases during his time as house physician at New York Hospital.
