Title: The Art of the Atlantic Salmon Fly Author: Bates, Joseph D., Jr. Place: Boston Publisher: David R. Godine Date: [1987] Description: Color frontispiece & line drawings in black and white by McDaniel, plus another color plate by him at end; 23 color plates of tied flies; a few black & white illustrations from photographs. Plus an extra suite of the color plates, and an original tied fly matted under acetate. 11x8½, bound by Claudia Cohen in quarter red morocco & linen boards, spine lettered in gilt, folding linen case with leather spine label. No. 42 of 85 copies so bound with the extra suite of plates and tied fly. First Edition. Signed by Bates on the limitation-page and on the inside of the plates folder. Sumptuously produced edition, handsomely bound and cased, perhaps most remarkable for the original tied fly, an example of the "Colonel Bates" salmon fly, tied by Ted Kantner and signed by him on the mat. The color plates of flies show over 300 ancient to modern patterns from the author's extensive collection; the extra suite of plates is in a linen folder matching the clamshell box. This is a copy of the "deluxe edition"; there is also a "limited edition" of 250 copies in a simple binding without the fly, but with the extra suite of plates, plus a regular trade edition. Lot Amendments Condition: Slipcase with the top corner slightly bumped, side panels with a touch of pale spotting; still fine. Item number: 157553
