First Edition. Second volume only of this two-part series; the first volume had been issued in 1842. Gordon Ray calls this work "the most ambitious English book with wood engravings" produced during the period from 1790 to 1914. The artists in this volume include: John Tenniel (his first commission as a book-illustrator), George Dalziel Henry Townsend, "Alfred Crowquill" (Alfred H. Forrester), etc. Ray calls Townsend's sketches for "Glenfinlas" one of "the great successes of the book" as one of its two "excursions into the supernatural."
