(8vo) 9½x6½", blue cloth, top edge stained, gilt stamped spine. 867 copies. Second Printing. Dustin calls this a valuable work, but believes some important facts were omitted. "This classic Clark title recounts the federal government's attempt to open a road north from the Oregon Trail through the Powder River country, hunting grounds of the Sioux, in the late 1860s." (Clark & Brunet). Dustin 139; Howes H382; Clark & Brunet 115. "The one volume edition published in 1960 contained an added letter from the authors, giving material which was suppressed in the original printing of the work." Clark and Brunet II, 134.
