Title: The Bridge. A Poem. With Three Photographs by Walker Evans Author: Crane, Hart Place: Paris Publisher: The Black Sun Press Date: 1930 Description: Illustrated from three photographs by Walker Evans 27x22 cm (10¾x8¾"), original wrappers printed in black and red, glassine jacket, publisher's gold paper-covered slipcase. No. 46 of 50 copies printed on Japan vellum, signed by Crane. From a total edition of 284 copies. Signed by Crane at the colophon, as issued. Extremely scarce example of one of the 50 signed and numbered copies of Hart Crane's only long poem, rare in such fine condition, with original glassine intact. A truly wonderful copy of a cornerstone in modern American poetry. The Bridge was Crane's only attempt at a long poem, inspired by his view of the Brooklyn Bridge from his apartment in Columbia Heights, and includes three plates from photographs of the bridge by his friend Walker Evans The Bridge comprises 15 lyric poems of varying length and scope. In terms of its acoustical coherence, it requires its reader, novelly, to follow both end-paused and non end-paused enjambments in a style Crane intended to be redolent of the flow of the Jazz or Classical music he tended to listen to when he wrote. Many critics consider The Bridge to be Crane's crowning achievement, and a masterpiece of American modernism. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear to slipcase with paper worn at edges, 1" piece from bottom panel lacking; toning to glassine at spine, a few minuscule tears to glassine at spine; volume itself fine or nearly so, with just a bit of occasional light edgewear, an exceptional copy. Item number: 302004
