The Goelet family, originally hardware merchants, were socially prominent for generations and were at the top of the social ladder in Victorian New York. The 1887 Goelet Building at the southeast corner of 20th Street and Broadway was put up by the brothers Robert and Ogden Goelet. In literature they are cited as owning sailing ships.
