The Butterfield Overland Mail: 1857-1869 Author: Conkling, Roscoe P. and Margaret B. Place: Glendale, CA Publisher: Arthur H. Clark Company Date: 1947 Description: 3 volumes. 412; 446 pp + atlas volume. Additional maps and illustrations in text volumes. (8vo) 9½x6¼", original red cloth, top edges gilt on text volumes, edges untrimmed, plain brown paper jackets (presumed original). American Trails Series, III, IV, V. First Edition. Volumes III, IV and V of the American Trails Series. Important, detailed history of the legendary express company, featuring numerous reproductions of early photographs, advertisements, handbills, maps, etc. Often considered the best work on the first overland postal service from the Mississippi to the Pacific Coast. Butterfield ran stages across West Texas for four years before the Civil War, later moving its operations north to the South Pass route, and finally becoming a part of Wells Fargo. A very important work concerning stage transportation in the Trans-Mississippi West. Due to the size and/or weight of this lot extra shipping and/or handling charges may apply.
