Title: The Catalogue of Honor or Treasury of True Nobility Peculiar and Proper to the Isle of Great Britaine: that is to say: A Collection historicall of all the Free Monarches aswell Kinges of England as Scotland (nowe united togither)... Author: Milles, Thomas Place: London Publisher: Printed by William Jaggard Date: 1610 Description: [5] leaves (including engraved title page), 99, [9], [3]-241, ([3] blank), [289]-1130 pp.; errata leaf. Extensively illustrated with cuts & engravings of armorial shields and crests; woodcut historiated and decorative initials; 2 full-page metalcut illustrations. (folio) 33x22 cm (13x8½"), period full calf. First Edition. Important heraldic work, of genealogic import. The author is not named on the title page, but the "Epistle dedicatory" is signed Thomas Milles. The work was begun by R. Glover and left with Milles to translate and reduce to method. He was assisted in its preparation by Lord William Howard Sir Robert Cotton, William Camden, Nicholas Charles and others, as noted in the dedication. Title-page engraved by Renold Elstracke. There is a neatly and elegantly calligraphed index on both sides of the front flyleaf, a few early notations on the title page recto, and further on the verso (partially covered by an old paper repair; occasional period ink marginalia within. There is a piece cut out of pp 493-4, which, judging by descriptions of other copies similarly mutilated, contained a paragraph mentioning the natural children of Charles Blount, Baron Montjoy - apparently systemized censorship took place. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing and wear to covers, hinges cracked, front cover coming loose; very good, quite clean within. Item number: 295317b
