The Crucifixion, large full-page miniature from the Canon of the Mass of an illuminated manuscript Missal on parchment [southern Netherlands (perhaps Antwerp), mid-sixteenth century] Single leaf, with large miniature of the Crucifixion, Christ with well-defined musculature, hanging before a brightly burnished gold sky emerging from bulbous grey blue clouds, St. John the Apostle and the Virgin Mary in vivid red and blue robes which billow dramatically, gesturing with hands with long thin fingers angled to express emotion in the Mannerist style, all within a realistic blue frame heightened with a liquid gold floral pattern and edge, a gold cross on blue grounds suspended below the miniature on an ornamental scroll (for the priest to kiss during the Mass), reverse with 5 lines of text and music on four-line red staves (rastrum 17 mm.), some chipping and small paint losses in places, trimmed to edge of miniature, overall in fair and presentable condition, 258 by 155 mm., large gilt frame
