Beschreibung:

Forrestal, James. Naval teletype message from SECNAV to ALNAV announcing the news of the death of President Roosevelt on 12th April. US Naval Communications Office, Banana River, Florida, 13APR45. Teletype message, 8vo. Marked priority with pencil annotation at upper right M.U.U. Old fold lines with several clean tears along the folds. Provenance: Quentin Ackels, stationed on Corregidor and captured by the Japanese. He was on the forced march through Bataan to Camp O'Donnell, at Tariac, April to May 1942. He somehow survived the war and was given this message by a Unit Commander, as a token of his sacrifice in the Philippines. He carried it, folded up, in his wallet for many years. The news of the death of President Roosevelt was an enormous blow to the American people. During his 3 terms in office he had faced a Great Depression, and won, bolstered a nation worn down by economic woes, and in his final term joined the Allies in a World War against the German Axis powers, and through his war efforts, beat back the forces of fascism on 3 continents, and in the process revolutionized the industrial capacity of the US. James Forrestal, as Secretary to the Navy, instructs his naval vessels to lower their flags to half mast for 30 days and hold funeral services when appropriate.
