Volume II: Containing the Debates in the Commonwealth of Virginia. viii, [33]-487 pp. 1828. Volume III: Containing the Debates in the States of North Carolina and Pennsylvania. [8], [17]-322 pp. 1830. Volume IV: Supplementary to the State Conventions, in 3 Vols. on adopting the Federal Constitution. [8], v-xvi, [17]-272, 404, [8] pp. 1830. Volume V: Supplementary to Elliot's Debates. xxii, 641 pp. 1845. Together, 5 volumes. Vols. I-IV are 20.3x12.3 cm. (8x5"), period sheep, recased, morocco spine labels; Vol. V is 23.5x14 cm. (9¼x5½"), period law calf, leather spine label. Complete set of Elliot's Debates of the Convention, including the elusive fifth volume, published some 15 years after the others, and in larger format. The first four volumes with the ownership signatures of John H. James to the front free endpapers, dated 14 Jan. 1871. John H. James (1800-1881) was a lawyer, banker, farmer, politician and more, a friend of Henry Clay and William Henry Harrison. Also, the four volumes bear the earlier ownership signatures and inscriptions of J. Louis Smith on the pastedowns and tops of the title-pages. Lot Amendments Condition: Some staining and wear to covers, Vol. V with stabhole to lower front cover intruding through to the title-page and following leaves, not affecting any text; some foxing, moderate internal dampstaining to the first four; about very good condition overall, an important set with significant provenance.
