Title: The Eclectic Third Reader; Containing Selections in Prose and Poetry, from the best American and English writers. With plain rules for reading and directions for avoiding common errors. Author: McGuffey, William H. Place: Cincinnati Publisher: Truman and Smith Date: 1837 Description: [2] ad, (3)-165, +[6 (of 8)] ad pp. Woodcut illustrations. (12mo) 7x4½, original morocco backed boards. First Edition, First Printing. The third in McGuffey's series of five readers begun the preceding year. In 1838 the author and publisher were sued for copyright infringement by Samuel Worcester, and a court injunction required that publication and distribution of this book be stopped. The book was immediately revised, and in 1838 a new edition now titled “Revised and Improved Eclectic Third Reader; …” was published, eliminating the portions that were claimed to be infringing on copyrighted material and replacing the lessons with different text. WorldCat lists seven copies of the present edition with an eighth copy located at the Library of Congress (there exists some discrepancy in pagination among the various copies). Rare. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine worn and deteriorated along rear joint, boards worn with some loss of blue paper covering (textual portions complete), hinges cracked, lower half of front free endpaper lacking, pencil and ink notes, signatures, etc. on endpapers and at head of a few pages, lacking penultimate leaf of ads at rear, amateur tape repair to final 2 ad leaves at rear, some foxing; nonetheless still a good example of a very difficult to obtain reader.
