The following six lots were commissioned by Archbishop John Ryder and have descended in the vendor's family to date. John Ryder was the youngest son of a non-conformist family from Lincolnshire. Endlessly flexible, they managed to get themselves ennobled and embraced the established church. Ryder through his connections managed to be appointed to the Irish Church, a standard career move against which Swift had previously fulminated. He lived in considerable style in Dublin and married his family into the landed gentry.
