The following thirty seven lots are from the studio of Marie Felicia Hett Nee Liévin-Bauwens (1908 - 2010) Felicia Liévin-Bauwens was born in West Norwood, London in 1908 together with her twin brother Felix. She painted and exhibited under her maiden mane until her marriage in 1943 when she continued to exhibit under her married name. Together with their elder sister Isabel the three siblings were initially taught artwork by Walter Donne and his wife Winifred. Felicia continued her training at Clapham High School and the associated teachers training college until she went to study at the London School of Art run by John Hassall, famous for his posters, where she won the Brangwyn Medal. From here she entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1928 where she won a bronze medal for Life Painting and was awarded the Leverhulme and Landseer Scholarships before attaining the RA Diploma in 1933. At this time she also studied wood engraving with her life long friend Joan Hassall and travelled in Europe. After leaving the Academy Schools her work was exhibited at the R.A., R.O.I, R.B.A., the New English Art Club and many other places. From 1927 she was living and painting in Amberley, West Sussex where her work was influenced by Cecil Ross Burnet. During the war, she was commissioned by the Aldridge Gallery, Worthing to draw many of the older houses in the town as a record in case they were bombed. Four of her watercolours were subsequently purchased by the Worthing Council. After her marriage she lived in Hertfordshire until the family returned to Sussex in 1962. During the 1970's and 80's she held regular studio afternoons for local artists. Her work at this time included illustrations for the Children's Guide Book at the Open Air Museum at Singleton and creating cut out models of the Museum's Buildings. She also created designs for the local church kneelers but her sight deteriorated after a sketching holiday in Cypress in 1995 and her last exhibition was held at Rackham Village Hall in 2000. Two retrospective exhibitions were held this year in her studio in East Harting, West Sussex and at Amberley Church Hall. Her work can also be seen at an exhibition to be held in February at the Jeremy Wood Gallery in Billingshurst. M. Felicia Hett, Nee Liéven-Bauwens (1904-1999).
