THE FORTY SAYINGS OF THE PROPHET WITH PERSIAN TRANSLATION BY JAMI' SIGNED SALIM, MASHHAD, SAFAVID IRAN, DATED THE END OF RABI' II AH 969/JANUARY 1562 AD Hadith, Arabic and Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled paper, 9ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 7ll. of elegant black nasta'liq of various sizes arranged in one or two columns and contained within gold-outlined panels, each folio with two such panels with 4ll. of diagonal nasta'liq , text panels laid down between variously coloured rules on gold-speckled borders, opening folio with gold and polychrome illuminated headpiece, first bifolio with text in continuous prose, colophon signed dated and stating that the copy was done in Mashhad, fly-leaves between each folio, some mild staining, in lacquer binding with floral borders and red doublures, one with a blue decoupé tree Text panel 5 1/16 x 2 7/8in. (12.8 x 7.2cm.); folio 9¾ x 6¼in. (24.7 x 16cm.)
