THE FORTY SAYINGS OF THE PROPHET WITH PERSIAN TRANSLATION BY JAMI' COPIED BY MAHMUD AL-MUZAHHIB AL-HARAVI, MECCA, DATED AH 960/1561-62 AD Hadith, Arabic and Persian manuscript on variously coloured paper, 8ff. plus 3 fly-leaves, each folio with 7ll. of flowing black nasta'liq all contained in gold-sprinkled panels with gold and blue interlinear rules, each folio with two such panels with 4ll. of diagonal nasta'liq between panels of larger nasta'liq , laid down between gold and polychrome rule on gold-speckled paper of various colours, opening folio with elegant gold and polychrome illuminated headpiece, colophon signed Mahmud al-Muzahhib bi Mecca al-Mubaraka and dated 960, two folios loose in binding, in green morocco with central gilt stamped medallion on red ground and gold borders Folio 8 5/8 x 5in. (22 x 12.5cm.); text panel 5½ x 3½in. (13.5 x 8.5cm.)
