Preceded by reports, indices & other preliminary matter. Illustrated with 144 plates (5 of them folding maps, 2 quite large and in color), most after Catlin, including 3 photogravure portraits of Catlin. (8vo) 22.7x14 cm (9x5½"), original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Remarkable history of Catlin, his paintings, and the exhibit at the Smithsonian. The two large folding color maps are: Map showing the Locations of Indian Reservations within the limits of the United States and Territories. 53.5x85 cm (5½" tear from stub, a few crease tears) Indian Territory 1887. 61.5x81.5 cm (very short stub tear) Provenance: Lowdermilk, '67 References: Howes D-416 Lot Amendments Condition: Spine a bit rubbed, gilt dull; conents a little shaken, not uncommon for such a thick book; very good or better.
