The Glensaddell Gold Medal: a fine and early 18ct. gold prize medal competed for at North Berwick Golf Club between 1832 and 1849 when won outright by Sir David Baird of Newbyth, 2nd Bart., hallmarked Edinburgh, 1831, maker's mark JM & Co., the suspension ring set upon modelling of crossed long nose clubs and feather balls, the circular medal engraved to the obverse with the coat of arms of the Royal Burgh of North Berwick and the motto VICTORIA, GLORIA, MERCES [Victory and Glory are the Reward] and inscribed PRESENTED TO THE NORTH BERWICK GOLF CLUB BY JOHN CAMPBELL OF GLENSADDELL 1832, the reverse inscribed 1ST. AUGUST 1832, WON BY, ROBT. OLIPHANT JUNR. OF ROSSIE AT 105, then further inscribing of subsequent winners: 7TH AUGUST 1833, ROBT. OLIPHANT OF ROSSIE AT 100 COURSE LENGTHENED 17TH SEPTEMBER 1834, JOHN H. WOOD AT 112 1835, MAJOR H.L. PLAYFAIR AT ... 21ST SEPTEMBER 1836, JOHN H. WOOD AT 120 COURSE SHORTENED SEPT. 1837, CAPT. BAIRD AT 84, 1849 3RD YEAR FOLLOWING AND MEDAL WON diameter of medal 5.7cm., 2 1/4in., overall weight 67gr., 2oz., 3dwt. Sir David Baird of Newbyth, 2nd Bart. (1796-1852), was a founding member of North Berwick Golf Club in 1832. He was also Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1843. Sir David Baird features in Charles Lees' famous painting The Golfers at St Andrews, painted in 1847. He is seen competing in the two ball foursome with Sir Ralph Anstruther (appointed captain of the R&A in 1825) against their opponents Major Hugh Lyon Playfair and John Campbell of Glensaddell. It was Campbell, also a founding member, who presented this prize medal to North Berwick on its inauguration in 1832. John Campbell was also a member of the R&A and twice winner of the Bombay Medal in 1849 & 1852. Sir David Baird won the competition in 1839 & 1840, but his subsequent hat-trick of successive wins between 1847 and 1849 won him the Glensaddell Medal outright. Baird was a keen sportsman whose other interests included salmon fishing, deer stalking and fox hunting. His death in 1852 was as a result of being kicked by his horse whilst hunting with Lord Elcho's pack in Berwickshire. His son of the same name (3rd baronet, 1832-1913) was a keen golfer at North Berwick and also became Captain of the R&A in 1859 (see following lot). Provenance: By family descent.
