'THE GREAT MOON HOAX' - [Richard Adams LOCKE (1800-71)]. Delle Scoperte Fatte Nella Luna dal Dottore Herschel. Florence: "Presso Giuseppe Formigli," 1836. 8vo (175 x 105mm). 24-pages, engraved frontispiece captioned "I Nuovi Abitatori della Luna," woodcut illustration on title, 24-pages (some leaves cropped at head with occasional loss of pagination). Attractively bound in modern speckled calf, spine gilt with red morocco lettering-piece. Provenance: later pencil annotation on the front free endpaper. The translator of this Italian edition, published in many different places and at many different locations in 1836, is not known. The extraordinary frontispiece, which purports to depict one of Herschel's supposed "Bat-men" (see footnote), is often missing. -- Na Chiacchierata tra l' Uommene de la Luna e Chille de la Terra cu na Spettacolosa Descrizione de Chillo Paese Sorprennente. Naples: "Da la Stamparia Filantropica," 1836. 8vo (160 x 95mm). 28-pages (some spotting and staining). Modern stiff wrappers, old upper wrapper bound in. FIRST EDITION of this satirical work, written in Neapolitan dialect, in response to the view, falsely attributed to John Herschel that there was life on the Moon. According to 'The Great Moon Hoax', now known to have been perpetrated by the New York Sun journalist Richard Adams Locke in 1835, Herschel believed, as a result of observations through a powerful new telescope, that not only did the Moon have oceans, but that its flora and fauna included "Bat-men", Moon-maidens (with luna-moth wings), Moon-bison, and other extravagant life forms. The author of this somewhat ephemeral publication is unknown. RARE. With 2 other related works, namely Lettera a Sofia intorno alle Pretese Scoperte fatte nella Luna. Edition II. Coll' Aggiunta di Due Article relative all Recenti Lettere di Herschel che Confermano la Falsita di Quelle Scoperte (Milan, 1836, 16-pages, original printed wrappers) and Alcune Osservazioni del Signor Arago ... intorno all Scoperte fatte nella Luna dal Sig. Herschel Figlio pubblicate all' Americain di Nuova-York e dalla Gazette de France (Milan, 1836, 14-pages, modern boards, original printed wrappers bound in. (4)
