Title: The "Green Jacket" from Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament Author: [Augusta National Golf Club] Place: Augusta, GA Publisher: Augusta National Country Club Date: [c.1980's?] Description: Size 46, with official distinctive Augusta National patch over the left breast pocket; two inside and two outside pockets. The coat retains all the original golden buttons with two on each sleeve and three down the front. All stitching, both inside and out, tight. Manufactured by designer Hamilton of Cincinnati, for Augusta with their cloth label hand-sewn inside. The original designers Hart, Schaffner and Marx of Augusta, were replaced sometime in either mid to late 1970's. Actual overall height size (from back of collar to tail): approximately 35 inches. Note: It has been pointed out that the original jacket manufacturer was Brooks Brothers until 1967, then Hamilton. And that Hart, Schaffner & Marx apparently produced perhaps just one, which was for Jack Nicklaus after he won in the mid 70's. It is unconfirmed if they produced others. The highly prized and much coveted Augusta National “green jacket,” which is bestowed upon golf’s Masters winner, held every year at Augusta National, Georgia. Aside from the Masters winners, the only other examples of this revered sports coat belongs to the actual members of the Augusta National Country Club, of which (until recently) were never allowed off the hallowed golf site and of which this one here once resided with a member. The winner of the Masters Tournament is awarded the “Green Jacket” (a tradition started in 1949 when Sam Snead won the event). The green coat is actually the official coat worn by members of Augusta National while on the club grounds; each Masters winner becomes an honorary member of the club. Winners keep their jacket for the first year after their first victory, then return it to the club to wear whenever they visit. By tradition, the winner of the previous year's Masters Tournament puts the jacket on the incumbent at the end of the tournament. In 1966, Jack Nicklaus became the first player to win in consecutive years and he donned the jacket himself. When Nick Faldo (in 1990) and Tiger Woods (in 2002) became repeat champions, the chairman of Augusta National put the jacket on them. Rarely are these jackets offered for sale and/or at auction. The most famous green jacket of them all, the one that once belonged to Bobby Jones sold many years ago at auction for $95,000; which is now on permanent display at a prominent southern golf resort. Jones co-designed Augusta National golf course along with Dr. Alister MacKenzie and was one of the founders of The Masters Tournament, first played at Augusta in 1934. Due to the current owner’s wishes, we are honoring their request to keep the original owner’s name private. A label inside the jacket does reveal the members’ name and will remain covered while on auction display at PBA Galleries; and ultimately, the identity will be revealed only to the winning bidder after the auction. Lot Amendments Condition: In excellent condition overall; a few loose threads, but nice and fine and ready to wear! Because of the extreme rarity of such a jacket and truly being one of the sporting world's greatest and elusive icons, and unless you are a member or win the Masters, this may truly be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own what so many treasure in such high regard.
