"An interesting and valuable historical contribution. Kirkpartick, a companion of Kit Carson, Joe Meek and other noted plainsmen, here tells the story of the expedition to Port Orford in 1851." Hon. Butler King and Captain Tichenor of California were the projectors of the enterprise, the details and leadership of which were left to Kirkpatrick. The party was ambushed by the Siwash and Rogue River Indians near Elk River and withstood numerous savage attacks, culminated in a dash for liberty, the details of which are told in the first 17 pages, the rest consist of descriptions and reports of the Salmon Mountains Coarse Gold Mining Company of Myrtle Point."
