Various paginations, half-titles present only in Volumes 7-12, as called for. Engraved portrait frontispiece in Volume 1; 3 engraved folding maps. (8vo) 21x13 cm (8¼x5¼") period full polished tan calf, spines ruled in gilt, red leather title labels, small circular green letter labels with volume numbers. "A New Edition." This work by Gibbons, considered by some to be the greatest historical work written in English, is the first modern history of ancient Rome, and covers the period of the Roman Empire from the 2nd Century A.D. to its collapse in the west in the 5th Century and in the east in the 15th Century.
