Title: The History of the Royal-Society of London, For the Improving of Natural Knowledge Author: Sprat, Thomas Place: London Publisher: T[homas] R[oycroft] for J. Martyn Date: 1667 Description: [xvi], 438, [1 errata] pp. Engraved coat of arms; 2 engraved plates. (4to) 7¾x6, modern full brown calf in a period style, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. An eloquently written account of the nature, organization, work and aims of the recently founded Royal Society. The work represents the Royal Society's attempt to give itself a genuine British origin, exaggerating the influence of Francis Bacon and suppressing the importance of contributions from Continental scientists like Haak and Mersenne. The work contains two contributions by Robert Hooke; "A method for making a history of the weather; and "An account of a dog dissected". It also contains Lord Brouncker's "Experiments of the Recoiling of Guns" and Dr. Goddard's "A Proposal for making Wine". Wing S-5032; Norman Library II, 1989. Lot Amendments Condition: Light edge wear; lacking frontispiece illustration by Wenceslaus Hollar; light foxing; else very good. Item number: 192715
