The Jack Boddington Collection of Life Saving Medals Three: Lord Alfred Spencer Churchill Jubilee 1887, silver, unnamed; Belgium, Royal Life Saving Society Medal, Leopold II, silver-gilt, reverse inscribed, ‘Lord Alfred Spencer Churchill’; Colonial and Indian Exhibition London Medallion 1886, 51mm., bronze, unnamed, in Ralph Heaton, Birmingham case of issue, very fine and better (3) £180-220 Footnote Alfred Spencer Churchill was born in 1824, the second son of George, the 6th Duke of Marlborough. He had a brief military career in both the 4th Hussars and 83rd Foot, finally attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Oxfordshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1860. He was a member of Parliament for Woodstock and subsequently a Justice of the Peace. Churchill’s service with the Society of Arts was extensive, becoming a member in 1862 and going on to serve as Chairman of the Council for two terms between 1875 and 1880 - receiving a Special Resolution of Thanks in 1880 from the Society. As a Member of Council, Lord Alfred was also a member of the Royal Commission for the Chicago Exhibition; he represented the Society as the British Delegation Representative to the International Congress on Life Saving in Belgium in 1876, where, in Antwerp, he was presented with the Gold Medal of the Royal Life Saving Society of Belgium. He acted as one of the General Committee of the Health Exhibition in 1884 and was also a Member of the Committee of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London in 1886 and the Paris Exhibition of 1889. Lord Alfred Spencer Churchill died at his home in London on 1 September 1893. Sold with copied research.
