J. H. Barbour, M.B. R.A.M.C.); 1914 Star (Major: J. H. Barbour. R.A.M.C.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. Oak Leaves (Major J. H. Barbour.); Portugal, Republic, Military Order Aviz, 4th Class breast badge, silver-gilt and enamel, with integral riband buckle and rosette on riband; France, Colonial, Order of the Black Star of Benin, 4th Class breast badge, silver-gilt and enamel, rosette on riband, mounted as originally worn, generally good very fine, scarce (6) £600-800 Footnote Provenance: Dr. A. L. Lloyd Collection. M.I.D. London Gazette 17 February 1915 and 10 July 1919. Portugal, Military Order of Aviz, Commander [sic] London Gazette 7 October 1919. France, Colonial, Order of the Black Star of Benin, 4th Class London Gazette 17 March 1920. John Humphrey Barbour, MB, was born in Huyton, Lancashire, in August 1873. He was a Civil Surgeon, who operated from home, from 1900. He was commissioned Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps, in January 1901, and served with the corps in operations in Cape Colony and in Orange River Colony between September 1901 - May 1902. Barbour held posts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1903-1905, and in India 1908-1913. He advanced to Major in January 1913, and served during the Great War in the French theatre of war from 20 August 1914. He was placed on retired pay in 1923, and was discharged from the Regular Army Reserve of Officers in 1928. He died in October 1944.
