Title: The Life of a Sportsman. By Nimrod Author: [Apperley, Charles J.] Place: London Publisher: Rudolph Ackermann Date: 1842 Description: vi, [2], 402 pp. Illustrated with 36 hand-colored plates by Henry Alken including frontispiece and additional title. 9¼x5½, later half red morocco gilt with stag's head tools in spine compartments, all edges gilt; bound by Birdsall. First Edition. First edition, mixed issue. This copy has three of the color plates mounted and these without titles; according to Tooley the first issue had four mounted plates with titles. This apparently represents a later variation of the first issue, before all the mounted plates were replaced. "Considered by many to be the premier coloured plate sporting book in the 19th century, by others as sharing this honour with Jorrock's Jaunts" (Tooley). Bookplate of Lord Esme S. Gordon. Tooley 65. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild wear to spine bands and ends, corners just showing; mild spotting to preliminaries and to some plate margins, imprints trimmed from plates; very good or better. Item number: 161312
