THE LITTLE PRINCE LOEWE, Frederick and LERNER, Alan Jay. "THE LITTLE PRINCE." Based on The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Movie by Paramount Pictures, Directed by Stanley Donen, starring Bob Fosse as "the Snake," and Gene Wilder as "the Fox," released 1974 THE LAST LERNER AND LOEWE COLLABORATION: "THE LITTLE PRINCE" In the early 1970s, Alan Lerner had been approached to consider a movie adaptation of the charming original modern fable by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Loewe found the screenplay by Lerner delightfully appealing and, although he was nominally retired, insisted on writing the score. The two, friends and collaborators since the war years, came together one final time, though it had been 11 years since their last joint project. Lerner recalled that their work in writing the show, mostly done in London, "was 'pre-Camelot again." Loewe, he said, "wrote the most beautiful score, filled with melody and bubbling with the innocence of youth." But the work, conceived in such optimistic circumstances, was disappointingly realized. Lerner later wrote that "it was never heard on the screen the way Fritz had composed it. The director took it upon himself to change every tempo, delete musical phrases at will and distort the intention of every song, until the score was unrecognizable. Unlike the theater, where the author is the final authority, in motion pictures it is the director. It undoubtedly was Fritz's [Loewe's] last score" (A.J. Lerner, The Street Where I Live, 1978). Loewe's personal archive includes 3 autograph melodic sketches, copyist's manuscripts which represent the composer's final versions of the musical numbers (several alternates for "Little Prince"), and separate and bound copies of those scores, for use in the filming. Totaling: 66 pages manuscript music; 84 pages separate mechanical copies, Loewe's bound score, 64 pages, 1 page typescript lyrics, 2 pages with Loewe's listing of the numbers in the show.
