The Order of St Stanislaus was awarded to Officers of the Royal Navy by the Russian Government for distinguished service rendered in the battle of Jutland. A set of miniatures, mounted as worn, all twelve medals. A second set of miniatures, mounted as worn, ten medals, lacking Knights Commander of St Michael and St George and the 1937 Coronation medal. Sir Humphrey Walwyn's remarkable history of service covers the Second Boer War, Great War and Second World War. Beginning in 1893 with two years at Dartmouth before joining the battleship Camperdown as a midshipman. By December 1900 he had been promoted to lieutenant. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal for service aboard the eight gun steam sloop H.M.S. Beagle, one of 139 no-bar medals awarded to those serving on the vessel. The Great War medals, lieutenant commander to Captain, were awarded for service on mainly Battleships including H.M.S. Warspite at Jutland for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Order of St Stanislas. Promoted to Captain at the end of 1916 he served aboard, and commanded various vessels, after hostilities ended and a spell at the Admiralty as Director of Gunnery Division he went on to take command of the battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth and Valiant. Promotion to Rear Admiral from 1928 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath and Flag Officer Commanding and Director of the Royal Indian Marine. Vice Admiral from 1932, his Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India was awarded on 2nd January 1933. Overseeing the change from the Royal Indian Marine to the Royal Indian Navy in October 1934 as first Flag Officer Commanding, he retired after a month in November being placed on the Retired List on 15th December 1934. Retirement was only brief as from 1936 Walwyn served as Governor of Newfoundland and chairman of the Commission of Government. Appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George on 6th June 1939. During the Second World War he played a crucial role in encouraging Newfoundlanders to join the war effort. Retiring for a second time in 1946 to Maiden Newton he lived until 1957.
