THE MUGHAL EMPEROR AURANGZEB AS A YOUNG PRINCE AFTER LA’L CHAND, MUGHAL INDIA, MID 17TH CENTURY Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the prince wears an elaborate gold patka embroidered with naturalistic red lilies, and brightly coloured striped trousers under a translucent jama , a tulwar and a katar in his belt and a flower in his hand, set on a gold ground inside a scrolling vine border and wide margins decorated with a floral lattice, the reverse with a Persian ghazal written in nasta'liq , the signature now rubbed, in similar gold decorated margins, areas of worm holing Painting 7¼ x 4 1/8in. (18.4 x 10.3cm.); folio 15 5/8 x 11 3/8in. (39.6 x 28.8cm.)
