Title: The Pastorals of Virgil, With a Course of English Reading, Adapted for Schools: In Which All the Proper Facilities are Given, Enabling Youth to Acquire the Latin Language, in the Shortest Period of Time Author: Virgil Place: London Publisher: F.C. & J. Rivington, et al Date: 1821 Description: 2 volumes. Two woodcut frontispieces; six engraved plates by William Blake; three lithograph maps (two folding); 117 pages of woodcut engravings including seven drawn by Blake, five of which were also engraved by him. (8vo) 17.5x10.5 cm (7x4¼") full red morocco, double gilt-rule borders, spines ruled and lettered in gilt, gilt-rule dentelles, all edges gilt. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Third Edition, First Edition with Blake illustrations. A fine rare set of this work issued for use in schools, containing some 230 illustrations including 17 woodcuts and six engraved plates by Blake, and four other designs by Blake but engraved by others. The impressions in this copy are quite clear and strong. Blake's woodcuts for this volume were not well received; nor were they well treated by the publisher who cut down the blocks and printed them poorly. Despite the poor treatment, these blocks have remained amongst the most influential woodcuts in the history of British art and their influence can be seen from Calvert and Palmer all the way up to the present day. Keynes 77; Bentley, Blake Books, 504; Bindman 602-18; Easson and Essick I, X. Lot Amendments Condition: Spines a touch faded; occasional light foxing within; a fine set. Item number: 282625
