Title: The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club: Containing a Faithful Record of the Perambulations, Perils, Travels, Adventures and Sporting Transactions of the Corresponding Members Author: Dickens, Charles Place: London Publisher: Chapman & Hall Date: 1836 Description: 20 parts in 19. Illustrated with 43 etched plates by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne). 8¾x5½, original green pictorial wrappers. Housed in a custom full red morocco solander case with onlaid monogram on sides, raised bands, gilt bordered spine compartments, title, date and facsimile autograph in gilt on spine. First Edition. First Edition of Dickens' first novel, in the original parts. Each of the parts is dated 1836, but the title-page which comes with the last part is dated 1837, which is the date of the first edition in book form. For the first 14 parts the wrappers, and text, are invariably in later states or printings, and they are lacking all of the advertisements; for Parts XV-XIX/XX, there are some variations, which are noted. A more precise description follows. Part I: Lacking the advertisements. Front wrapper detached. Part II: Lacking the advertisements. The three plates are in states called for by Hatton & Cleaver. Lacking the address by Dickens announcing Seymour’s death. Part III: Lacking the advertisements. The two plates are the substitutes etched by Phiz. Part IV: Lacking the advertisements. The first plate (“The Breakdown”) is the second state of the original plate; the second plate (“First Appearance of Mr. Samuel Weller”) is the second state of the original plate. The two plates are in the later, correctly paginated, state (Hatton & Cleaver note that the first, mispaginated, states are “the rarest items in the whole realm of Pickwick).
