The Property of the Downside Abbey General Trust[LESLIE, JOHN] A treatise towching the right, title, and interest of the most excellent Princess Marie, Queene of Scotland, and of the most noble king James her Graces sonne, to the succession of the croune of England. [Rouen: George L'Oyselet], 1584 8vo (175 x 113mm.), title and c1 within woodcut border, woodcut roundel portraits of Mary and James on verso of title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces, ruled in red, contemporary limp vellum with gilt centrepiece, lacking folding genealogical table, binding with small area of damage on lower cover, lacking two pairs of ties Leslie (1527-1596), the bishop of Ross, joined the entourage of Mary Queen of Scots after the death of her French husband and he became one of her advisors. His treatise on Mary's right to the English throne was first published in 1569 and was subsequently reworked during Leslie's exile in France and Italy, following Gregory XIII's approval of a proposal for Mary and James to rule Scotland jointly. Mary was, however, executed by Elizabeth I in 1587.
