Title: The Rudiments of Christian Teaching or a Short sacred History and a Short Christian Catechism. From the Russian language into Aleutian-Fox translated by Reverend Ioann Veniaminov in the year 1827, and in the year 1837 corrected; while Reverend Jacob Netsvietov, in examining this work, by the use of his explanations, made it understandable to the Atkans, who have their own dialect. Author: Veniaminov, Ivan (1797-1879); Netsvietov, Iakov Place: St. Petersburg Publisher: At the Synod Press Date: 1840 Description: Russian and Aleut (including some in the Atkan dialect) texts printed in Cyrillic characters. 8vos, contemporary pale yellow wrappers, [iv], [XX], [lacking 1-24, primer and prayers], 104 pages and [52] pages. Housed in a custom gilt-lettered morocco and cloth box. These rare Russo-American religious texts were published in the Aleutian language by Ivan, or Ioann, Veniaminov (1797-1879), the pioneering linguist, Russian orthodox priest and missionary to Alaska. In 1977 he was canonized as St. Innocent of Moscow and venerated as "Enlightener [Apostle] of Alaska and Siberia." Last seen in auction at Sotheby's in 1967. Lot Amendments Condition: Wrappers worn along spines; first few signatures of history separating; foxing throughout. Item number: 306355
