THE SARAH SLOCUM CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY BLOCK-AND-SHELL CARVED CHEST-OF-DRAWERS Labelled by John Townsend (1732-1809), Newport, dated 1792 The rectangular top with molded edges above a conforming case fitted with four blocked and graduated drawers with cockbeaded surrounds, the uppermost centered by a recessed carved shell flanked by convex carved shells, all over a conforming molded base, on blocked ogee bracket feet, the uppermost drawer with two labels: the first printed, "MADE BY JOHN TOWNSEND NEWPORT" with hand inscriptions, "Sarah Slocum's" and "November 20th 1792"; the second hand inscribed, "[illeg.] give to Lydia T. Conner"; the backboards with chalk inscription, "J T"; a cross brace with the hand inscription in graphite, "J.C.S. Taber"; appears to retain original brasses 34in. high; 36in. wide; 19in. deep
