Pike joined the Texas Rangers in 1859 and stayed for two years, then left the state when Texas seceded. He passed himself off as the nephew of Albert Pike during his travels, and joined an Ohio cavalry unit which saw a good deal of action in the Civil War. He performed some amazing feats as a spy behind Confederate lines, was taken captive in 1864 and managed to escape. He wrote this book soon after his return to Ohio following the end of the war.
