THE SPANISH FORGER. TWO LARGE ILLUMINATED MINIATURES ON A CUTTING FROM A MANUSCRIPT CHOIR-BOOK ON VELLUM (1) A courtly couple talking to a shepherdess holding a lamb, a shepherd playing the bagpipes, sheep grazing in front of a cottage in a fenced green field with trees, at back a castle on top of a hill against a golden sky. On verso three lines of music on a 4-line red stave (2) A peasant treading grapes in a tub, a courtly couple tasting the wine, two women bringing grapes in large baskets, in front of a thatched house, in a landscape with trees, against a golden sky. On verso 4 lines of music on a 4-line red stave. (Small burnhole affecting the dress of one of the peasant women). Both miniatures 234 x 164mm, apparently on cuttings from the same 15th century Italian manuscript. According to W.Voelkle, The Spanish Forger (New York, 1987), the artist was active in forging medieval miniatures, in Paris at the end of the 19th and early this century. His forgeries were generally original compositions in a very colourful style. The second composition above is very similar to illustration 237 'Making and tasting wine' in Voelkle's book (2)
