Objektsbeskrivning THE SWEDISH COLONY IN AMERICA WITH INTERESTING MAPS (3 dissertations). SWEDBERG, JOHANNES DANIELSSON. (author, respondent) - ELVIUS, PETER (preses). Dissertatio gradualis de Svionum in America colonia. Uppsala (Werner) 1709. Small 8vo (150x90 mm.). (6), 32 pp. Text narrowly shaved, browned and with some spotting, title with inner margin faded, some minor notes. Later 20th century brown half calf, gilt title on cover, partly worn. On page (5) the poems by Jesper Swedberg (an uncle of the author) that sometimes are lacking. Sabin 94037. According to Streeter the "Dissertatio gradualis de Svionum" was "the first book written by a native American to be published in Sweden". Biorck was the son of a Swedish missionary who was sent to America in 1697. The account contains much significant historical detail and is especially knowledgeable concerning the Indians." (II:917). Jersey in America, c. 118x270 mm.) Title with some holes and losses of letters, repair to margin on title and second page, dampstained in the beginning, small tear to margin to last page, some spotting. Later 20th century brown half calf, gilt title on cover, partly worn. Jonas Silfverling (1703-1760), Swedish goldsmith and engraver active in Stockholm, Sweden, in the early 18th century. Text in Latin and Swedish. Wide margins. Later half calf binding, gilt title on cover with the wrong year (1875), partly worn, cover partly warped. First edition of Carl David Arfwedson's dissertation on the Swedish colony in America. Marklin, Catalogus disputationum 41; Setterwall Svensk historisk bibliografi 1731; Sabin, A dictionary of books relating to America 1941. Includes a description of an attack in 1655 made upon the Swedish colonies in New Sweden by the Dutch, under the command of Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Netherland (pp. 23-30). Carl David Arfwedson (1806-1881), Swedish author, elected as an honorary member of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1883. All volumes with bookplate of Arvid Wallgren. 3 volumes.
