Title: The Tourist's Pocket Map of the State of Illinois Exhibiting its Internal Improvements, Roads, Distances &c. Author: Mitchell, Samuel Augustus Place: Philadelphia Publisher: S. Augustus Mitchell Date: 1835 Description: Copper-engraved pocket map, hand-colored. 39x32 cm. (15½x12½"), folding into original red straight-grain morocco covers lettered in gilt, 12.3x7.5 cm. Pocket map of Illinois with column at left giving the population by county, as well as breaking it down by race, sex, and whether slave or free - the total number of slaves was 746, less that have the number of "Free Colored." At right is a column listing various steam boat routes, and at lower left is inset of the Lead Mine Region. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor rubbing to gilt on the cover' archival tape reinforcements/repairs on the verso along the folds, a few brown spots to the map; very good or better, coloring bright.
