THE TREDEGAR GOLD CUP A GEORGE III GOLD TWO-HANDLED CUP AND COVER MARK OF GABRIEL WIRGMAN, LONDON, 1782 Vase-shaped and on spreading foot, with reeded leaf-capped handles, the detachable cover with bud finial, with foliage borders, the lower body chased with foliage and applied with two oval medallions hung from ribbon-tied husk swags, one engraved with inscription, the other with the figures of Justice and Prudence, the foot engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked on base and cover, the foot engraved with scratchweight '100-4' , on ebonised wood plinth with gilt-metal mounts, side handle and applied inscription, with fitted wood case 17 in. (43 cm.) high 100 oz. (3,114 gr.) The inscription on the cup reads 'PRESENTED TO SIR CHARLES GOULD, PRESIDENT, BY THE SOCIETY FOR EQUITABLE ASSURANCES ON LIVES AND SURVIVORSHIPS; AS A TESTIMONY OF THEIR REGARD, THEIR RESPECT AND THEIR GRATITUDE, 1782. ' The inscription on the plinth reads 'THIS CUP OF SOLID GOLD WAS PRESENTED TO SIR CHARLES GOULD BAR T BY THE SOCIETY OF EQUITABLE ASSURANCE AS A TESTIMONY OF THEIR REGARD AND THEIR RESPECT & THEIR GRATITUDE 1782 ' The arms are those of Sir Charles Gould (1726-1806).
