Title: The Use of the Globes: Or, The General Doctrine of the Sphere: Explaining and Demonstrating the most natural Propositions relating to Astronomy, Geography, and Dialing Author: Wright, Thomas Place: London Publisher: John Senex Date: 1740 Description: iv, 162, [2] pp. With engraved frontispiece, two copper-plates, and folding copper-plates numbered i-xv and 1-12. Also with tables and illustrations throughout. 19.5x11.5 cm (7¾x4½"), full calf, gilt ruled, raised bands. With a total of 30 plates (Plate v not present, and plate vi appearing twice). No copy sold since 1995, according to American Book Prices Current. Interesting work on astronomy, geography and dialing by the English astronomer Thomas Wright He was the first to describe the shape of the Milky Way and speculate that faint nebulae were distant galaxies. Also included is A Synopsis of the Doctrine of Eclipses. Title page states that the book is: "Illustrated with a great number of copper-plates, explanatory of each proposition, in a manner entirely new." Lot Amendments Condition: Spine splitting and rubbed, some edge wear; foxing, a few pages browned, very clean and appears to have been washed; very good or better. Item number: 256981
