THE VISIONS OF THE MONK MESROP, THE IGUMEN COSMAS, THE MONK JOHN, THE VISIONS OF GREGORY and THEODORA from the LIFE OF ST BASIL THE NEW, and LIFE OF SAINT ALEXIUS, 'THE MAN OF GOD', in Church Slavonic, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Russia, Old Believer, c.1780] 217 x 165mm. 200 leaves, 17 lines in square black semi-uncial script, rubrics and three- to five-line initials in red, SIXTY-NINE FULL-PAGE MINIATURES on versos only, in pen and ink and watercolour, with halos in liquid gold, and FOUR DECORATIVE HEAD-PIECES with full-page frames, modern pencil pagination numbered 1-193 with 7 leaves misnumbered (somewhat soiled through use, some minor marginal tears, minor marginal worming at beginning and end). Contemporary Russian blind-stamped calf, two brass clasps and catches (minor worming, corners worn, rebacked). CONTENT: The Vision of the Monk Mesrop, by the monk Palladius, ff.1v-58, detailing the vision of the Last Judgement and punishment of sinners; The Vision of the Igumen Cosmas, ff.59v-88v, in which the soul of the old monk is dragged away by demons, only to be released into heaven from where he also sees hell; The Vision of the Monk John, ff.90v-107v, whose soul is met by St Benedict with whom he ascends the ladder to heaven and views heavenly paradise and the torments of the damned in hell; The Life of Saint Basil the New and his protegée St Theodora of Constantinople, taken from his pupil Gregorius by Saint Dimitrii Rostovskii, ff.108Av-175, on their persecution and salvation; The Life of Saint Alexius, the 'Man of God', on his feast day, 17 March, ff.176-193v, recounting his life as a beggar and the charity of his family.
